I am in receipt of your despatch stating

that numbers of local rowdies on the Chinese side of the boundary

are about to make au incursion into British territory, and request-

ing me to take steps for the preservation of order.

I at once ordered Lieutenant Colonel Shib

Yu-shan (4) to despatch by steamer able military officers

in command of 800 men of the I (2) Battalion to take up their

quarters in the neighbourhood of Samchun to preserve order. I also

ordered the San On and Tung Kun Magistrates respectively to take

action and report. Of this I informed you in my reply to your

despatch. I am now in receipt of the following report from the

Sen On Magistrate, Chao: "On May 6th., I proceeded with all

and Sha f'ou and Huang Kang (names given) and carefully questioned
